Allscripts
Electronic Medical Records, pt. 3
I’m doing a quick round up of the big EMR systems and some of the promising new ones. I think I may have over done it on the pharma companies when I did that round up, so I’m going to be a little briefer here. I will try to do the five most popular EMRs and a couple emerging ones. This week we have the #3 EMR by market share, Allscripts.
This week I also experimented with using ChatGPT to help with research and drafting. Honestly, pretty helpful! I did rewrite a good portion for style and added some of my own. I’ll definitely be incorporating it more in the future.
Allscripts
Allscripts provides not only electronic health records, but also practice management software and other services. The company was founded in 1986 by Glen Tullman and Paul Black, and it was first called Medic Computer Systems. Allscripts is now one of the top five EMRs.
The company went public in 1999 and has since expanded through acquisitions. In 2008, Allscripts merged with a competitor, Misys Healthcare Systems, to form what is now known as Allscripts-Misys Healthcare Solutions. In 2010, the company acquired Eclipsys Corporation, a leading provider of clinical software solutions, and in 2018, Allscripts acquired Practice Fusion, a cloud-based electronic health record company.
According to Forbes, Allscripts generated $1.82 billion in revenue in 2020, an increase of 1.7% from the previous year. As of 2021, Allscripts has more than 180,000 physician users in its network and serves over 2,700 hospitals and 13,000 extended care organizations.
Allscripts has faced some challenges in recent years. In 2018, they paid $145 million to settle a Department of Justice investigation.
