A little history
Johnson & Seabury was founded in 1873 by Robert Wood Johnson and George Seabury, primarily selling medicated plasters.
In 1886, Robert Wood joined his brothers James Wood and Edward Mead to create a line of sterile surgical dressings under the name Johnson & Johnson. They expanded into first aid kits.
In 1894, they began to produce Johnson’s Baby Powder, then maternity kits.
J&J went public in 1943. By that time, they had produced first aid, medical relief, masks and surgical products for many wars & disasters including WWI, the 1918 flu, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and many others. They had earned a reputation as a very good employer, expanding during the great depression and promising to reserve jobs for those who fought in WWII.
1959 - J&J acquired McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a manufacturer of prescription drugs, including Tylenol. They followed this acquisition with Cilag in 1959, Janssen Pharmaceuticals (developer of ADHD and antipsychotic medicines) in 1961, DePuy Synthes (manufacturer of minimally invasive devices for strokes) in 1998, and Janssen Biotech in 1999, Ethicon in 2008, and many others.
Since 2010, acquisition activity added Crucell (vaccines), Coherex (for atrial fibrillation treatements), Abbot Medical Optics, Actelion, Intefra LifeSciences, Tear science, LifesScan and Momenta Pharamceuticals.
In 2020, J&J and its subsidiaries aided the covid response by ramping up Tylenol production, innovating on ventilator use by introducing a splitter, and developing its own single-shot vaccine, which partly due to a rare clotting disorder in six recipients, fell far behind rival Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. In April 2021, the vaccine had achieved $100 million in sales, less than 1% of J&J’s revenues
